The “mirror” in the song, or, more accurately, his own reflection, is a symbol of a part of himself-the part of himself that is not aware of the problems in the world. Therefore, the journey he takes in the song is from blindness to being able to see the harsh realities of the world, as well as his own irresponsibility. Early in the song, he sings: “Who am I to be blind, pretending not to see their needs”. Ironically, though the song is full of imagery of mirrors and reflections, it is Jackson who is unable to see. This is in contrast to Jackson himself, who is of course wealthy enough to own: “Could it really be me pretending that they’re not alone”. The problem of homelessness and people with not enough money to borrow or loan is also discussed: “There are some with no home, not a nickel to loan”. People without food, especially starving children, are mentioned in the song: “I see kids in the street, with not enough to eat”. There are many contrasts in the song that reveal the social issues that concerned Jackson. With Man in the Mirror, Jackson reveals a deep inner-conflict and proposes a challenge to himself and to his listeners that in order to change the world, people must first change themselves. This may seem contradictory to the questionable choices Jackson made in his personal life, so this is why Man in the Mirror may be his most personal and revealing work. Like other pop stars, Jackson wrote many songs about love and partying, but a number of his songs, such as Heal the World and We Are the World, showed a keen awareness of global issues such as poverty, hunger, and environmental conservation. But his untimely death provides an opportunity for us to look back at his musical career, and to celebrate his talents as a singer dancer and songwriter. The controversies that surrounded his life in the last decade made Jackson the subject of many jokes and was threatened to end his career in shame and obscurity. Always. The death of Michael Jackson has given many fans and critics cause to revisit his work. Winger Timothy Weah said he and USMNT defender Deandre Yedlin came up with it. That’s no fun.īut, to be fair to Pulisic, it apparently wasn’t his idea. Don’t wear the shirt and back away from it. Not trying to cause controversy? It’s a bit late for that, buddy.Įxactly! If you’re going to troll, troll. “I think you guys know the message, I don’t want to speak on it too much, it’s not a big thing, not trying to cause controversy.” Not much! He pretty much downplayed the entire thing after the match, per ESPN. He talked more about being able to break the deadlock for his team and get them on the board during the match. That shirt is him reversing Ochoa’s quote and trolling him. Per his shirt, he is the man in the mirror who Mexico is seeing. Well, uh, actually, not according to Pulisic. To be fair, he’s right! Mexico is leading the United States in their all-time series with 36 wins, 15 draws and 22 losses.īut still, this is where the troll begins. “Mexico is the mirror in which the wants to see itself and wants to copy.” He pretty much dismissed it all with this quote. He was asked about their history in an interview with TUDN earlier in the week as well as the US’s growth in the game so far. He’s been there for many a beatdown from Mexico on the USMNT. Dude has been around and is an absolute legend on the pitch. It goes back to a quote from Mexico’s keeper, Guillermo Ochoa. OK, so why did they do this? What does it mean? The USMNT Twitter account tweeted out the lyrics after the goal was scored. Wait, Man in the Mirror? Like.like the Michael Jackson song?Įxactly like that. That is, until you realize some of the recent barbs traded between the USMNT and Mexico. Initially, that doesn’t make a ton of sense. Underneath his kit he wore a shirt saying “man in the mirror.” But after Pulisic scored his goal against Mexico, he began lifting his shirt - not to take it off, but to reveal something. It was what he did after he scored the goal that people just kept talking about.Ĭelebrations after goals always generally get pretty lively. ultimately won, 2-0.īut it wasn’t just the goal that caught everyone’s eyes or even the score. He was absolutely phenomenal in their win over Mexico on Friday, scoring a goal to break the ice and put the United States up 1-0 in the 74th minute of their World Cup qualifier match. This dude is just the gift that keeps on giving for the US Men’s National Soccer team.
